The Challenge

Obtaining Medicare Coverage: A company that makes an automated injectable drug delivery medical device, was struggling to obtain Medicare coverage for their insulin delivery medical device, due to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) misunderstanding of the product’s capabilities. More than 100,000 people rely on this medical device to manage their diabetes, including thousands of Medicare-eligible beneficiaries and this created significant challenges across the patient population.

The Solution

Signal Group worked with top tier media publications to tell patient stories and help health care reporters understand the issue. After only a few weeks of earned media placements and interviews, targeted thought leadership placements, and a robust hyperlocal targeting campaign, CMS agreed to allow the insulin delivery system to be officially covered by Medicare.

Working with the company, the Signal team created a patient storytelling program to demonstrate the importance of the specific medical device in people’s lives and placed these videos on the campaign website. Our team developed of several mini documentaries, bringing these stories to life.

This is a prime example of how a coordinated media and public affairs campaign, our team helped build a campaign website, create a marketing strategy targeting federal decisionmakers, and execute a digital ad campaign to encourage CMS to change its reimbursement policies. As a result of this coordinated effort, CMS now reimburses patients who use this medical device.
