One year ago, I began my career in communications at Signal Group. From op-eds to press releases, digital ads to website management, and webinars to in-person strategy sessions, I dove head-first into the world of comms. Over the past year, I have learned many lessons about communications and marketing, and the following four insights are chief among them.
Strong writing skills are key
During my first week at Signal Group, I was onboarded over Zoom, introduced to client teams, and began drafting an op-ed and press release. I was expected to write well from day one. Nothing can replace the skill of writing quickly and concisely.
Digital should be in our DNA
If you told me that during my first year of my communications career that I would be helping lead a complete upgrade of client’s website, I would have called you crazy. But I have learned that in any modern communications practice, digital touches everything we do. From social media management and digital advertising to data analytics and website management, every communicator must have a working knowledge of digital strategy.
Client relationships are crucial
Client Relations involves more than a communications strategy. Being able to manage client expectations while meeting and exceeding their strategic communication goals is both an art and a skill that I have had the opportunity to participate in first-hand.
Take it one day at a time
The world of communications is fast paced and juggling multiple priorities for varied clients is not always easy. Keeping the big picture of my clients’ strategic goals in mind helps me focus on what is most important. I am committed to keeping the “why” front and center in my work and taking it one day at a time.
My first year at Signal Group has given me first-hand experience in the ever-changing field of public relations. It has been an exciting first year and I am looking forward to all the challenges and accomplishments this next year will bring.
