29 years later, we continue to honor the victims of Pan Am Flight 103.
Yesterday, in 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all aboard. It took Congress several years, with a huge push by Senator Frank Lautenberg and others, to enact the first of several aviation security bills.
To many, including the families that I had the opportunity to visit with in crafting the legislation and folks in the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration, it is a day of remembering those students and family members who went down that day. And to the family members who continued to push for aviation security improvements, despite the painful losses they endured, I shall be forever grateful.
